He was a leading figure in the struggle for the restoration of democracy in Nigeria. He has been arrested and jailed by past successive military regimes in Nigeria. He was released from life imprisonment when democracy was restored in Nigeria in 1999.

He was also appointed by the Nigerian government as a Board Member of Nigerian Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI).
Shehu Sani was awarded an honorary Doctorate Degree by Nigerian University of Continuing Education Enugu, Nigeria. He has received a number of awards by the West African Student Union, Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria’s TELL magazine honored him as a Hero of Democracy, National Association of Nigeria Authors inducted him into the Hall of Fame.
