Ibrahim Babangida is commonly called IBB and was born on the 17 day of August 1941 in Minna, Niger State. He is a retired officer at Nigerian Army and was a former Nigeria’s military ruler. He is known to be the ruler of Nigeria starting form 27 day of August in the year 1985 until August 27, 1993 when he departed his office. He became one of the key players in military coups in Nigeria and during his time, human rights abuses happened as what the evidence is saying.
Ibrahim Babangida came from an ethnic group named Gwari. He got married on September 6, 1969 with Maryam but died due to cancer on the 27 of December 2009. They have four children namely: Halimatu, Aishatu, Aminu, and Muhammadu.
Spirited man of action
He is described as “spirited man of action”. He took acts against the corruption of military regime together with the army major general through coup d’état that caused Major General Mohammed Buhari to leave his office. Ibrahim Babangida was the Nigeria’s fifth coup and ruled the military in 1960 when it got its independence from Great Britain.
He made himself to become president of Nigeria instead of appointing other people in the position. He became the ruler of his county with the use of iron fist considering that he is benevolent compared to his predecessors. He promised to decrease the rate of corruption, solve economic problems in their country, and to have a democratic form of government.
He soon became known to be an intelligent politician. Before deciding for things that are related to his country, he asked first Nigerian citizens if they agree or not. He asked for opinions in order to know what the best is for the betterment of every Nigerian. He also offered Nigerians about a program regarding the economic recovery that includes ways on how to convince them to accept what the IMF proposed. He is also responsible for the good economy of Nigeria wherein he adjusted the production for farming and the earnings of the government. Under his regime, there was a decrease in terms of foreign debt and its relevance to money that was earned from oil exporting. Ibrahim Babangida also evaluated the currency of Nigeria to brace up the exports instead of oil.
His recovery program is a proof that his government tried harder in order to solve economic problems compared to other countries. His term paved way for Nigeria to receive loans that came from World Bank and the chance to have credibility in terms of their economy among the nations that are westernized. Through his efforts for saving his nation from economic crisis, he gained much respect from Nigerians.
Ibrahim Babangida is the reason for Nigeria to become progressive and embrace modernity. He wants every Nigerian to become competitive and achieve the kind of living that is not far from those countries that are successful. He is doing his best to serve his people, although there are many challenges that they are facing, but he still continues what he has started.
