Cross River is the federal state in Nigeria, situated in the southern piece of the region.

It is named as a tribute to the cognominal river, near which it is situated. The population of the state is about three million people and is fastly growing nowadays. And if to believe Cross River state news today, the state is on the 19th place according to the population level.

The municipal centre of the state is town Calabar.

The state is on the border with Cameroon, and from the other side it is washed by the Atlantic Ocean. The whole state is divided into eighteen Local Government Areas.

There are many ethnic groups living in the state, and the most widespread languages, despite English, which is the official one, are Efik and Boki. And there are many other forms used, but much less. This huge diversity is not a big problem for people living in this state, as most of their languages belong to one language family.

According to Cross River state news, the authorities found a perfect way to entertain people and earn a lot of money at the same time. They invested much money into the development of tourist sector, and attract people who want to see some natural wonders as well as historical points. Also, they carry out one of the main famous festivals in Nigeria. Especially impressing is the festival which takes place during the Christmas rush.

Education level in the state is also quite high, as there are many universities and colleges with very qualitative and serious education programs.

The main city of the state, Calabar, was founded in the fifteen century. Nowadays it is the most thriving and bustling city of the state, it is also very fastly developing. Portuguese sailors created there a big port in the 16th century, where they used to sell palm oil first. Later those people realised that there is the much more valuable subject of trade than oil, they decided to sell black skinned people. And so the city turned into a widely known slavery market. They captivated people of Nigeria and exchanged them for different goods which came from Europe.

Since the 17th century, Calabar became the biggest slave market in Africa.

Efik, who ruled the city at that time, were seriously influenced by European and American sailors, they learned their language and borrowed many cultural traditions.

When slavery was forbidden, Calabar became important for the whole country ocean and river port. Later there was founded a special missionary station, and local people were seriously impressed by their ideas, so many of them became Christians.

The city played an important role in the whole historical and cultural development of Nigeria, as there appeared first hospital and post office.
