EFCC convenes emergency meting, begins search for Maina

- The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched a fresh manhunt for Abdulrasheed Maina

- Maina is the former head of the Presidential Task Force on pension reforms

- Maina has been on the wanted list of the International Police (INTERPOL), but reportedly resurfaced in Nigeria recently

A report by Premium Times indicates that the EFCC has begun a manhunt for the former head of the Presidential Task Force on pension reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina.

Maina was sacked from the federal civil service in 2013 and was in 2015 placed on the wanted list of INTERPOL by the EFCC.

The EFCC's move is as a result of media reports on Friday, October 20, which indicated that Maina had been secretly reinstated to the civil service, with promotion, despite being wanted for alleged corruption.

Maina was issued a letter of reinstatement dated Monday, October 2 by the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation.

The letter claimed that Maina’s case was reviewed and that a decision was taken that he be reinstated.

The letter also indicated his new posting as acting director of the department of Human Resources at the ministry of interior.

The reinstatement was allegedly carried out on the instruction of the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

In reaction, the EFCC leadership convened an emergency meeting on today, Sunday, October 22 to strategize on the case.

A source quoted in the report said operatives of the EFCC were detailed “to smoke out Mr. Maina wherever he might be”.

Maina is said to be shuttling between Kaduna and Abuja since he sneaked back into the country.

Detectives are said to have spread around the city, including a safe house that is said to have been offered Maina by one of the nation’s security agencies. Also being closely watched by operatives are Maina’s many houses in Abuja.

When queried, EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, said Maina “is still a fugitive. We are after him”.

Meanwhile, a coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) has expressed concern about the fight against corruption by the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

The CSOs made their thoughts known during a press conference on Thursday, October 19, in Abuja.

“For a president, reputed for having zero tolerance for corruption and famously stating explicitly that “if we don't kill corruption, corruption will kill us,” there has been very disturbing silence over allegations of corruption in critical positions that should have never been overlooked,” the CSOs said.
