Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Effiong Abia, says traditional rulers can be instrumental in tackling insecurity in their areas.
Abia said this in Uyo on Tuesday.
He said the roles of traditional rulers were as important as those of government officials.
He said, “Traditional rulers are indigenous to their communities. They know everybody within their domains.
“Before the advent of colonisation, the traditional rulers have always been there; since there has always been law and order in the society, they have always been the custodians of those laws.
“It has not been the intention or the plan of any government to upstage traditional institutions.
“If you talk about crime, the traditional rulers are so important. If you talk about who is who, the traditional rulers know you, your families and who your parents are; whereas it is the policeman who has been posted to the area that will start asking the people for information about certain people in the society.”
