Illegal Mining: 9 Buried Alive In Zamfara

Nine illegal miners were yesterday buried alive at Dogon Daji village in Ruwan Dorawa in Maru local government area of  Zamfara State.

The incident happened when they were digging up gold at one of the mining sites few yards away from Dogon Daji village.

A witness, Shafi’u Abdullahi said, “we were inside the mosque when we heard about the incident. We rushed to the site and found out that the underground tunnel had collapsed and buried people alive.

We used hoes, shovels and objects to rey to rescue the trapped miners but we were able to rescue only one who was rushed to the hospital in Maru local government.

There are about five illegal mining sites in the area.

Police Public Relations Officer Hassan Usman Talba confirmed the incident, saying the law banning illegal mining is in force, regretting that it is difficult to locate illegal mining sites.

Reacting, the state Commissioner for Information Ibrahim Birnin Magaji said,  ‘’We know that defiant people are engaged in illegal mining activities. We’ ve started arresting and prosecuting them. The situation will soon be arrested’’.
