FUEL scarcity has led to about 20 percent increase in transport fares at different motor parks in Bauchi State .Yesterday, the product was sold for between N132 and N138 in some filling stations, while black marketers sold a gallon for between N450 and N500.

At Yankari Express terminus government-owned mass transit park, a senior officer said: “ Because of fuel scarcity and increase in pump price, we have increased our transport fare, prior to the increased we carry passengers to Kaduna, Abuja and Yola at N1500, now we have increased it to N1800. We used to carry passengers to Gombe and Jos at N500, now we will take them at N700, while passengers from Bauchi to Maiduguri will now pay N2000 instead of N1800”.

At the public transport parks, officials of National Union of Road Transport Workers Union, NURTW and employees of trade unions, Mallam Yahaya Adamu and Sani Mohammed Kabo said the transport fare from Bauchi to Abuja is now N3500 instead of N3,000, Bauchi to Kano, now N1,900 instead of N1500.

Many passengers, who spoke to Daily Trust, cited lackadaisical attitude of government to the plight of the common man and prayed for God’s intervention.

The state chairman of Tanker Drivers Union Alhaji Chindo Mohammed said his members operated with hardship as they spent between 30 to 40 days without getting the product.
