Yeyemoolu was the first wife of Oduduwa, the father of Yoruba race, unfortunately she was childless. In order that her husband will have children of his own she was alleged to have advised him to marry her best friend. After much persuasion her husband agreed. He married her best friend who bore him children and ended up mocking her friend Yeyemoolu for her childlessness. When she couldn’t take the mockery from her best friend any longer, Yeyemoolu Oduduwa and friend that she will do something that will make her live forever.

Yeyemoolu, first wife of first Ooni of Ife, Oduduwa who turned to a well for being called barren

She sank into the ground and turned to a well. Though this happened many centuries ago, she still plays significant roles in the lives of Yoruba people till date.

She is the first wife of every Ooni of Ife that has reigned in Ile Ife after her husband. No Ooni of Ife ever enters the palace for the first time without her consent. Water from the well is said to be used to wash the feet of every new Ooni before he steps into the palace premises and that is the only time water is taken out of the groove of Yeyemoolu.

Yeyemoolu well which is Ooni of Ife's first wife

Barren women seeking fruits of the womb, and people seeking prayers and guidance go to the well to pray which are said to be answered but they only drink water from the well but cannot take it home or out of the groove.Cups are available by the well side for whoever wants to drink from it to take the water.

For you to enter Yeyemoolu's groove you have to off your shoes as the groove is sacred. The well is not also covered anything used to cover it will be flung away. The well is also said to be friendly, anybody who mistakenly fell into it will be found in either of the six rivers it is linked to.

Yeyemoolu well is said to be linked to six different rivers but it’s groove is inside the Ooni of Ife’s palace. She is presently the first wife of the reigning Ooni of Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II and definitely she will still take on more husbands.
