MASSOB marks 17 years of Biafra agitation

- The Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) is to celebrate 17 years of agitation for Biafra independence

- The celebrations will include church service and a peaceful procession by MASSOB members on September 13

Ralph Uwazuruike, the founder of the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), has annouced plans to celebrate 17 years of non-violent agitation for independence of Biafra.

The celebrations will take place in all the senatorial districts including south-east and Niger Delta areas on Tuesday, September 13.

The movement offers to celebrate the significant date with a non-denominational church service in the morning and a peaceful rally.

Apress statement issued by Mazi Chris Mocha, the director of information, reads in part: "On September 13, 1999, following the formal inauguration of MASSOB on September 9, 1999, by the Igbo national council of chiefs, the movement embarked on its first public rally in Lagos which was of course based on the principle of non-violence and non-exodus."

Mr Uwazuruike wished "the National leader of MASSOB, Chief Solomon Ordu Chukwu and the emerging new Biafra Republic long life and a happy celebration."

The news was made public during a meeting between the MASSOB/BIM leaders at Ojukwu Memorial Library in New Owerri, Imo state capital.
