The Command Information Officer (CINFO), Western Naval Command of the Navy, Lieutenant Commander Jerry Omodara, has said that nobody or organisation can pressurise the Navy to release MV Myre Seadiver, the Russian vessel that it arrested about a week ago, insisting that the ship which was carrying arms and ammunition came into Nigerian waters illegally.

He maintained that full investigation must be carried out on the vessel before anything can be done about it. “We have to follow due process, not forgetting the fact that the ship entered into Nigeria without valid documents,’’ he added.

A senior naval source told Daily Trust that available statistics show that the vessel was in Nigeria in 2006 for the training of a security group in military war fare, and that it also provided VIP escort to the same group.

“They were also in Kenya in 2006 and in Central African Republic in 2005 to train some local groups,’’ he added. At the time of arrest, MV Meyr Seadiver was carrying 14 AK-47 rifles and 3,643 rounds of ammunition, as well as 22 Benelli MR1 rifles.
