Economists Against Okada Ban

Institute of Chartered Economists of Nigeria, ICEN, has described the ban of commercial motorcyclists, otherwise known as Okada or Achaba, by some state governments and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, as unjustified and unconscionable.

ICEN Coordinator in the South-South Zone, Friday Udoh, who said this in a statement yesterday, added that the reasons adduced for banning the operations of commercial motorcycles were untenable since various institutions were available to check such alleged illegalities.

ICEN said instead of outright ban, routes should have been assigned to reduce unemployment and frustration.

Udoh said: “Instead of resorting to blanket ban, the affected state governments should have assigned routes for commercial motorcycles operation.

“They can also set up operational standards and monitor same through various instruments of the state such as police, Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC; Lagos State Transports Management Agency, LASTMA, and Vehicle Inspection Officers, VIOs, among others.

“The ban by the Lagos State government was the most scandalous because the ACN government gave out some of the motorcycles and helmets as electoral handouts.

“It appears that the government merely deceived them just to win their votes, hence the uproar being generated by the operators.”
