317 People Die In 763 Accidents Within 9 Months, Says FRSC

A total of 317 people lost their lives between January and September in 763 Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) across Ogun, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), has said.

The Ogun Sector Commander, Mr Ayobami Omiyale, who made the disclosure in an Interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta on Monday, described the figure as "alarming".

The FRSC boss said that a breakdown of the figure shows that 228 of the victims were male while 74 were female.

He said that 15 children were also killed in the period under review.

Omiyale said that 1,298 men, 658 women and 35 children sustained various degrees of injuries due to the accidents in the period under review.

"In all the RTCs, we have 491 private vehicles and 790 commercial, seven government and nine diplomatic vehicles were also involved.

"Most of the crashes can be attributed to over speeding, dangerous driving, mechanical failure, loss of control, tyre burst, brake failure, among others.

"I want to assure you that the command is working round the clock to reduce crashes to its barest minimum; we are not relenting at all.

"We are engaging commercial drivers on safety tips and measures from time to time and we are also organising workshops and seminars to educate motorists across the command," he said.

Omiyale revealed that a total of 33, 937 traffic offenders were arrested and booked across the state in the period under review.

He said that 17, 389 of them had their vehicles impounded for various offenses such as failure to use seat belts, driving against traffic rules and dangerous driving, among others.
