Flood: More Houses Submerged In Lokoja 4 years ago 10

More houses have been submerged in Adakolo, Mpata and Gadumo area of Lokoja in Kogi State, following the overflow of the River Niger bank which was caused by the release of water from Kanji, Shiroro and other dams.

The Federal Government had last week warned that there would be flood along the coastal communities of Niger, Delta, Lokoja and Benue States.

Our correspondent who visited the area observed that more houses have been submerged while occupants of houses likely to be submerged in the next few days were seen making efforts to park out. One of the victims, Isaac Ochema, told Daily Trust that he has been living in the area for the past two years, and that the river used to over flow its bank but never in such magnitude.

He said he has no choice but to move out of the area despite the fact that he had no place to go to. Another resident, who gave his name as John, called on the government to come to their aid, saying they have no money to move out.

The state’s Commissioner for Environment, Abdulraham Wuya, said most of the people affected were those who built houses on water ways, adding that they have been advised to evacuate the area. Home Page
