Man Arrested For Beating Wife With Iron Rod

The president of Agege Grade A Customary Court, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, Mr Emmanuel Sokunle, has ordered that a 39-year old jealous husband, Ibukun Oluwadamilare, be remanded in prison custody for committing contempt of court.

Mr Sokunle had in his ruling during the last adjournment of a divorce proceeding instituted against the estate agent by his wife Adesuwa, ordered that both parties should maintain absolute peace before returning to the court for further hearing on their matter.

But Oluwadamilare went against the court instructions and beat his 33-year old wife on three different occasions as well as break her leg by using iron rod on her on one of such.

Adesuwa, a mother of three, who limped to the court in excruciating pains, said her husband beats her with iron rod when she went to his house to recover the petrol he forcefully took away with the generator he bought for her when the going was good.

She told the court that her husband said he would prefer to kill her and go to prison rather than see her alive.

“He came to my shop after we left the court the last time we appeared to come and retrieve everything he bought for me. He bought a small generator, tokunbo freezer, phone and stabiliser for me but he is fond of selling off our properties whenever he is broke. On that fateful day, he came and forcefully took the generator away. When I told him my petrol was inside it, he asked me to come to his house to retrieve my fuel.

“He also took the tokunbo freezer, the phone he bought for me, our electric cooker and poured away the rice I was cooking for my children and took the pot away with him too. When I resisted, he beat me blue black and there was nobody to rescue me because it was at dawn and people were still sleeping.

“At day break, I went to his house to retrieve my fuel and he pounced on me, using iron rod to beat me. When I was rescued from him, I reported the matter at Area G Police Station and they gave me a note to proceed to government hospital for treatment,” she told the court.

Oluwadamilare, in his reaction, said he beat her with iron rod because she brought a man along when she came to retrieve her petrol from the generator.

“She came to my house with a man and they started abusing me in the process. The guy was standing outside while she was in the room with a keg to take the petrol. They were conversing with each other and abusing me.

“I was lying down on my bed when this was going and I had to force myself out of the bed when I couldn’t bear it any longer and hit her with the iron rod I could lay my hands on,” he told the court.

He also accused his wife of stay out late  and engaging in extra-marital affair at the detriment of their children.
