An ex-soldier, Sunday Emmanuel, has been caught by a combined team of vigilante group and members of the community stealing underground cables of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) in Unguwan Dosa area of Kaduna State.
Two members of the vigilante group guarding the area, Ogden Amure and Lukman Badamasi, said the incident took place around 2am along Gwava road in Unguwa Dosa area of the metropolis.
“We were sitting down at Gwava road in Unguwan Dosa around 2am when a man passed us carrying a door. We stopped him and asked him where he was going, but he acted as if he wanted to bang the door on our heads so we told him to leave. We did not know that the man hid behind flowers and waited for us to leave before carrying out his plan. When we saw him removing the pipes, we started shouting, and people came out and started beating him”, Amure said.
Speaking on the matter, the Senior Manager Distribution, PHCN Kaduna, Ayuba Batagwari, said the treatment the people of Gwava meted on Sunday should serve as an example to others who engage in cables vadalization/ theft.
He commended members of the vigilante group for their courage and dedication to work. Confirming the incident, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Aminu Lawal, said as soon as investigation is concluded, the suspect will be charged to court.
