Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has decried the non utilisation of the 2006 national population census saying that the politics that followed the headcount was responsible for its non utilisation.
Obasanjo who spoke at the weekend while receiving the National Commissioner of National Population Commission(NPC), Mrs Oluseyi Aderinolu-Olusanya at his hill top residence in Abeokuta said the last census conducted in 2006 in the country was the most credible.
“The last census in the country was the most credible which could have helped the nation to grow but unfortunately it was not well used.”
While pointing out Lagos State in particular, Obasanjo said: “census is germane to the development of any nation, as it aids national planning, but Lagos vehemently rejected the result because of politics attached to it”.
He advised the management of National Population Commission(NPC) to ensure that the forthcoming 2016 is not only credible, but well accepted.
