A short list of events involving Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau

A northern group, Arewa Youths Integrity Forum has said that the latest video by the Boko Haram terrorists operating in the Northeastern part of Nigeria shows a division among the sect.

While speaking to journalists in Abuja on Sunday, April 3, the national president of the Arewa Youths Integrity Forum, Ibrahim Abubakar said the video of the terrorists’ leader claiming the group has surrendered is a proof of an obvious crack within the ranks of the Boko Haram terrorists.

Abubakar also said video is the handiwork of some selfish Nigerians aimed at ensuring that insurgency continues in Nigeria.

Also describing the individuals as “war entrepreneurs”, Abubakar said the same people defrauded the past administration under former president Goodluck Jonathan of billions of naira.

The funds the individuals claimed was for negotiations and ceasefire but with the aim of diverting the money for personal gains, Abubakar said.

He said: “They will use the two videos as compelling argument to draw the federal government into engaging them as brokers and will thus pocket the proceeds of the media they had carefully set up. The nation must not be led down this path again.

"Furthermore, an equally possible facet is that Boko Haram sponsors, patrons and benefactors who want to rubbish the Army and the federal government used paid actors for either of the videos or for both. The intention would be for the federal government the Army to become complacent and engage in premature celebration of a seriously battered Boko Haram and consequently slowing down the offensive against the murderers who will then have time to regroup and receive arms and logistics to take on the military,” he said.

Abubakar also urged the Nigerian government and the army not to be cajoled into any kind of false achievement is the ongoing fight against insurgency in the country.

"The only surrender that Nigerians will recognize is that of Boko Haram members or leaders that surrender or hand themselves to our troops. Surrendering by video or any other indirect methods is not acceptable. The crimes they committed were committed in person so they should also surrender in person. Those who want to continue fighting the Nigerian state have made their choices as enemy combatants and the rules of engagement are clear," he said.

The group also called on the National Intelligence Agency and the Defence Intelligence Agency to review all hardware displayed in the video with a view of establishing its origin through its expertise.

On the report by the Eastern Radio that some soldiers were killed during a feud in a military barrack, Abubakar said the write up is a deliberate and calculated campaign of slander aimed at misleading the public and cause disaffection among troops.

He also called on the mischief makers to desist from such unpatriotic acts aimed at demeaning the efforts of the Nigerian military.

The notorious Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau had earlier released a video claiming he has surrendered to the Nigerian military but two days ago, the sect in another denied any speculation that it might surrender.

The group in the video maintained the war against the Nigerian government will not come to an end.
