Nigeria now world's largest producer of cassava - Ogbeh

Mr Audu Ogbeh, the minister of agriculture and rural development stated that Nigeria has become the largest producer of cassava in the world. This became prominent with the country’s annual output of 45 million metric tons.

Ogbeh who was represented by Heineken Lokpobiri, the minister of state of agriculture and rural development, disclosed this yesterday, March 28 at the official launch of the state partnership for agriculture.

This programme was organized by Synergos in Nigeria in collaboration with the Ministry and Bill and Melinda Foundation (BMGF). At the official launch of the state partnership for agriculture, he revealed that more than 35 improved varieties of cassava had been developed and registered in Nigeria.

“These varieties had increased the production of cassava to make Nigeria the largest producer of cassava in the world with an annual output of 45 million metric tons”, he had said.

He disclosed that flour mills are being encouraged to substitute at least 10% high quality cassava flour for wheat flour. On this note, he commended Master Bakers for their positive response to Government’s policy towards this direction.

He also said that the Federal Government would bear its demand for the introduction of high quality cassava flour for bread in the country.

Cassava has of recent become a focal point of attraction to many as the various uses of the tuberous root vegetable are being discovered. Cassava flour particularly is gaining momentum as a grain-free flour. It also contains a higher amount of calories and carbohydrates as compared to sweet potatoes. The huge potential of cassava flour is making it a close replacement for wheat flour.
