Students who sat for the March 2016 University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) have called for the removal of Professor Dibu Ojerinde the registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) over numerous irregularities in the examination and result.

The 2016 exam was the first time computers were used to write all the exams and students and parents have cried out in outrage that the results released were not the true testimony of the performance of the students. They claimed the computer-based exam was still in its trial state and had a lot of irregularities.

The students numbering about 500 carried placards on March 15 to the Lagos state House of Assembly calling for the state to intervene in the current situation. They claimed that the incompetence of the examination body has cost a lot of them the opportunity to apply to tertiary institutions.

Mr Dotun Sodunke who is the president of the Association of Tutorial School Operators said the registrar of JAMB has shown with the year’s exam that he has overstayed his relevance. He claimed results were just given arbitrarily to students with a number of them getting very low results. He gave the example of students who got text messages confirming the release of their results but when they printed the e results, the scores were different from the ones contained in the text message.

He said: “I had a candidate who scored 264 in his JAMB and he had his parents even shared a testimony in church. To his surprise, his score had changed to 176 when he printed it and it has stayed that way. What happened to his earlier score?

Some of the students who were given low marks have received text messages from some private universities offering them provisional admission. How did these universities – which they did not apply to – get their details? Someone is trying to enrich these institutions.”

Sodunke added that the registrar was trying to force the stodents to apply to private universities

One of the students who spoke to Legit.ng and simply gave her name as Biola said she sat for her exam on March 2 and her result has not been released since then.

Another student, Vivian Michael called for the cancellation of all the results as those who scored high marks were just lucky.

“All universities should ignore the JAMB result and allow all students that chose the schools to write their post UTME. They can pick the number of students they want after the post UTME. The JAMB result cannot be trusted as the computer-based exam was just a test-run that the exam body has not perfected.”

Another student said she already got a text message confirming her result as 234 even before she sat for the exam and when she finally did, a new text message claimed she scored 127.

A condidate, Joseph Olawale claimed 100 marks were removed from his original score but a few days after, 40 marks were added again which still his score short of 200.

Another candidate said the computer kept logging her out and each time she logged on, she had to start answering the questions from the beginning as the ones she had answered before simply disappeared.

The students asked President Muhammadu Buhari to extend his change focus to the educational sector and get Ojerinde removed as he was paving way for private universities to make more money by marking students down.
