Outdoor Sanitisation will create New Opportunities - Adepoju

THE Director General of the newly created Oyo State Signage and Advertisement Agency (OYSAA), Mr. Yinka Adepoju has said that efforts to rid Oyo State of sub-standard and non-conforming outdoor advertising structures will leave no stone unturned.

Adepoju spoke at the start of the exercise in Ibadan recently. According to the objective is mainly to reshape Oyo State landscape and re-energise the outdoor space “to make it more beautiful, decent and conducive.”

The sole aim of this exercise, he emphasized, “is to rid the already polluted environment of dilapidated, dangerous, broken down, non-conforming and sub-standard advertising structures scattered all over the place.”

With the on-going exercise, Adepoju informed that, “new erection/installation of billboards and signs are henceforth put on hold until further notice while a new order of what the outdoor space in Oyo State will look like shall be communicated to all concerned at a stakeholder’s forum which is scheduled to hold in a fortnight from now.”

He however asked all practitioners in the state to visit their sites and ensure that such billboards are properly tagged and well maintained. “Our sites inspection in the last two weeks revealed that so many sites have been neglected by owners as they are found to be in very bad shape. Such sites have constituted nuisance and eyesore for long on the roads. This unprofessional attitude can no longer be tolerated.

“We enjoin practitioners to please respond to this call as we believe this new initiative will provide limitless opportunities for better outdoor growth in Oyo State and request that you be part of it for a more conducive, enabling business environment.”

Meanwhile, Adepoju has commended the commitment of OYSAA enumerators to the cleaning up exercise. He expressed satisfaction that the one-week training exercise organised for 50 cadets of the YES-O seconded to the signage agency from the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has lifted the capacity of the enumerators effectively.

At the commencement of the training, Adepoju had charged participants to brace up for the challenges of creating new lease of life for outdoor business in the state.

In what he termed a ‘silent revolution’ to make Oyo State outdoor space more beautiful, decent and conducive, he enjoined all stakeholders in outdoor advertising practice to join the Transformation Train in order to achieve an unparalleled success in this herculean task of turning around the outdoor scene in the state. This mission, he insisted, “must be accomplished.”

The enumeration exercise he affirmed would form the database for the agency as a proper audit of all categories of signs and billboards which will detail out the advertisement on the structures, areas where the hoardings are located, condition of the structures and the GIS location map will be carefully carried out after the training.

Adepoju however reassured stakeholders and the general public that, with this new initiative, there would be provision of limitless opportunities for outdoor growth in Oyo State and a level playing field for all who want to practice in the state.
