Wande Coal performing…

The city of Lagos witnessed a combination of different genres of music at the Lagos edition of Star Trek 2012, which was held at the Ejigbo Township Stadium on Friday, June 2, 2012, as some of Nigeria’s most appreciated artistes, such as 9ice, J Martins, Wande Coal and Obesere gave an attentive audience a great show.

Unlike previous shows, the show did not kick off until 10:35 pm, with comedian Laff Up taking over the stage from the regular Star host, Gbenga Adeyinka. For more than 45 minutes, the MC took the audience through dance competitions and different forms of entertainment to prepare them for the big names.

The performances kicked off at exactly 11: 21pm, with upcoming artistes like Lil Fizzy and Dan B, among others, introduced themselves to the audience.

Crystals sets the show in its right mood.

Entering to the sound of Jimmy Jatt’s ‘Stylee’, the 2012 Star Trek winners, Crystals group kept the audience’s feet moving throughout their presence on stage, with a powerful delivery of different songs and dance steps from the ladies in the group. Romeo’s sensational delivery of rhythmic rap gave the newly crowned group a standing ovation from the audience.

After their performance, the two ladies waited backstage to enjoy the show as usual, moving to every bit of music played.

We are home and very happy right now. We appreciate the audience for all they have been doing for us‘, said the group after the performance.

When asked about the promises made to them as the winners of the 2012 edition of Star Trek, they replied ‘Of course it has been fulfilled, we have more than expected‘. They added, ‘To develop our brand and music, we would like to collaborate with artiste like 2face, Tiwa Savage and D’banj. They are the giants of Nigerian music and the pace setters so, we would like to have them on our scene to boost our brand. We are also looking forward to singing alongside Beyonce‘.

After Crystals spent more than 45 minutes on stage, Laff Up, understanding the needs of the audience, introduced the Oyoyo master, J Martins, who thrilled them in an hour long performance of almost all his songs. After his performance, J Martins took time talk about his brand of music.

I don’t like when people say I do high life music alone; I diversify. What informed my style of music is my taste for African culture and music‘.

According to J Martins , his recent album has sold more than two million copies and counting, but he frowned at the level of piracy in the country.

I hate the act of piracy very much, I mean so much. I have always condemned the act. I am expecting the day federal government will rise up to our aid because we are tired of these people. I will also like to say that it is a privilege and honour to be on Star Quest 2012, especially for their discovery of young talents‘.

Wande Coal took over the show

At about 2: 25 am, MAVIN Records singer, Wande Coal took the audience on another level of rhythm, starting with his popular hit song ‘Se na like this?’ He followed up with his other hits including ‘Na who born the Maga‘, hyping up the audience, and delivering what many called one of the best performances of the night.

After Wande’s show, the artiste, Akande Abolore, fondly called 9ice, was introduced. He entertained audience for over 50 minutes with his tracks, mostly from his ‘Bashorun Gaa‘ album. Feeling at home, 9ice enjoyed interacting with the audience on several of his tracks.

Abass Akande Obesere rounded up the show with his usual energetic performance. His 45 minute performance met a warm reception from his expectant fans.

Speaking with NET, the show’s anchor, Laff Up, expressed his joy and appreciation for the opportunity given to him by Star.

I feel great, I feel honoured right now because last year I was here, but not as an anchor. Taking over the stage from Gbenga Adeyinka is not easy. He has been doing a great job‘. Home Page
