UNION Bank Hockey Club and Temmak have emerged champions at the Lagos State Hockey Association-organised two-day six-aside Inter-Clubs Grassroots Championship concluded over the weekend.
In the male event, Union Bank defeated Young Stead 1-0 to clinch the N40,000 cash prize. Young Stead got N30,000 and Dynamic finished third to smile home with N20,000. Temmak won the female category and N40,000, while 90 Degrees Hockey Club and Dynamic, Akoka, came second and third to earn N30,000 and N20,000 respectively.
Fourteen clubs comprising five female and nine male teams took part in the tourney and it is one of the quarterly Inter-Clubs Championships facilitated by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant on Grassroots Sports Development to Governor Raji Fashola, with active collaboration with the Sports Ministry and the Sports Council.
President of the Nigeria Hockey Federation, Patrick Ukah, described inter-clubs championship as a good intervention that would help the development of sports in Lagos.
Lagos Senior Special Assistant on Grassroots Sports Development, Wale Oladunjoye, said Fashola is committed to seeing that Lagos sports is transformed to the status the state was known for in the past, hence the inter-clubs championship with the long term aim of discovering pools of athletes for future competitions.
