Another tragedy averted in Lagos

What could have been another doomsday in Lagos after the Dana Air crash that occurred last Sunday, was averted yesterday as a loaded fuel tanker suddenly tumbled amidst heavy traffic and spilled its content on the highway.

The incident, which occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Berger area of Lagos, caused stampede as other road users  hurriedly diverted from the area to avoid possible inferno.  No casualty was recorded.

The tanker was negotiating a bend from Michael Otedola Estate and Capital Oil Filling station when it suddenly veered off and fell.   Its content gushed  out  on the highway while other vehicles were still trailing. The other motorists sensing danger quickly took precautionary steps and made a detour. The incident caused serious gridlock and uncontrollable hooting of horns as each vehicle sought an escape route.

The situation was, however, brought under control by officials of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) who promptly moved to the scene and cordoned off the area. The traffic officials diverted all vehicles heading toward that direction to safer routes before they later removed the vehicle.

The content was later neutralized with foaming liquid to avoid casualty..  The spokesman of LASTMA, Mr. Omolashe, also confirmed that no casualty was recorded as officials of the authority swiftly controlled the situation.  Some of the eyewitnesses recalled that similar incident in the past had caused serious human and vehicular casualties.

However, in a statement issued yesterday by Bi-Courtney Highway Services Limited (BHSL), it thanked the Lagos State Fire Service, the security unit of the Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Capital Oil fire service department, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), and the Lagos State Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, for their quick response and cooperation. To forestall incessant carnages on the road, tanker drivers have been urged to drive with care, especially in this rainy season.

“BHSL has lined up a series of enlightenment campaigns for tanker drivers starting from next week, due to the recurring carnage caused by reckless driving and indiscriminate parking,” says the statement signed by BHSL spokesman.
