At least one building was razed down and property worth millions of naira destroyed at the weekend in Omeka in Ubima community of Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, when irate youths went on the rampage to protest the death of their colleague, Mr. John Mbolunu.
A source in the community - hometown of the state governor, Rt. Hon Rotimi Amaechi - said trouble started last weekend when the family of the deceased reportedly consulted an oracle, which named someone (names withheld) as his killer.
The oracle reportedly claimed that the man being accused used 'diabolical powers' to kill his victim.
The source said: “The youths went on the rampage as soon as those who went out to consult the oracle came back to mention the name of the suspect. The youths became angry because the deceased had suffered for years before God answered his prayers and he started building a house in his compound. The house was at completion level before he died."
It was further gathered that the youths were also angered by a growing trend in the community where young men die immediately they start to make a headway in their business or profession.
A youth in the community, who asked not to be named because of fear of attack, said: "About five youths have been sent to their early graves by some wicked men and women in Omeka Village; the suspect is on the run, but he should count himself lucky that he was not in the house the day we set the house on fire.
“The deceased was a youth and the youths will fight for him. Sooner, we will fish out all the evil men and women in Omeka Village and slaughter them to pave the way for peace of the village," he said.
