The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi and the Benue State University, yesterday joined their counterparts across the country in a one-day solidarity strike against the re-appointment of Professor B.B Fakae as Vice-Chancellor of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST).
At a joint news conference in Makurdi, the lecturers said they were protesting what they described as the illegal procedure followed by Governor Chibuike Amaechi in reappointing Fakae to head the institution.
Speaking on behalf of the body, Dr. Ralph Amokaha, the BSU chairman of ASUU, decried what he described as the frightening twist in the crisis of governance in the institution.
“It is unfortunate that Amaechi took an unpopular decision by imposing the embattled vice-chancellor on the university because he is held in high esteem as chairman of the Governor’s Forum in the country. Amaechi, as chairman of the Governor’s Forum needs to respect the rule of law because his decisions have a lot of implication”, Amokaha said.
