One of the issues that human beings have mostly debated upon is on tribalism and racism. These twin problems come in different shades in different societies.

Among the Igbo speaking people found in the Southeastern part of Nigeria, there are some people seen as outcast. These people are called 'Osu.' The interesting thing about the Osu people is that they are also of Igbo descent but they are seen as people who should not be associated with based on some myths that they were accursed.

This Osu issue prevents the Osus from being recognised as human beings and as bonafide members of the Igbo society. Marriages and other social relationships are totally cut off from the Osus. Up to this present moment, derogation of the Osus is still rife among the Igbos.

In India, the form of tribal problem there is called the 'Caste System.' It is a form of tribalism that the white Indians see mostly the black Indians as nobody. They see them as sub-humans.

Coming to Nigeria, the major bane of growth and development is tribalism. A Yoruba man does not really trust a Hausa man and an Igbo man even if both of them are upright, He prefers his fellow Yoruba man even that one is a scoundrel.

A Hausa man sees the Igbo man as a business fraudster and a Yoruba man as inferior to him, while an Igbo sees a Hausa man as a dumb person and a Yoruba man with low business acumen even if both are very kind to him.

This vicious cycle continues on and on without any solution in sight for donkey years.

1. The white superiority phenomenon

There was a time in the United States of America where blacks were never allowed to attend the same schools the white children attended. This problem lingered on before the likes of Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X stood and spoke against it. A similar thing happened in South Africa where blacks were killed in the guise of the Apartheid system of government.

The real and lasting solution to tribalism and racism was explicitly stated by Almighty Allah in Chapter 49 verse 12 of the Glorious Qu'ran:

“O mankind, We have created you from the fertilisation process between a male and a female. And we made you tribes, race, nations and countries so that you should recognise yourselves. The best person among you is the person that fears his Lord (not the white man or black man). Surely, Almighty Allah has knowledge of the person that is not tribalistic or racist, and He will give you details about all acts of racism and tribalism all the day of judgement.”

The above verse shows why these twin problems should be abhored by all and sundry in order to live a life of peace.

2. Our Creator needs not decide for us

In the different systems of government practised all over the world, only a few countries decide that they input some of the words of Almighty Allah in the ways they do their things. Human beings have the notion that by relying on Godly advice is like putting themselves in bondage.

They ask themselves, how are they going to relate with people of different orientation who are not of their type. Therefore, they see people of different languages and colours as people who should be shown cold shoulders always.

3. Culture supersedes all things

Some cultures in Nigeria for instance are alien to anything that comes from a person of other culture.

There is always a campaign about unity in diversity among the different tribes in the country. People only pay lip service to this. What happens afterwards is that one tribe is always trying to annihilate the other tribe using its political strength or numeric advantage. This is one of the reasons some heartless Fulani herdsmen have been killing people in some parts of the country. The recent mayhem being the attack in Adamawa state.

4. It is easier to rule the world with tribalism and racism

There is a wrong belief that a group of people can only become subservient to another if the trump cards of racism and tribalism are played. This is the chief reason some inhumane world leaders instigate a tribe or a race against another. Noteworthy to mention is the Hutsi and Tutsi civil war in Rwanda where there was a genocide and a whole tribe was almost wiped off.

5. Parental and societal influence

Some parents do not help matters. Right from the cradle, they have been influencing their children on how to passionately detest people who do not speak their language or who do not have the same skin colour as they have. In this wise, these children carry on the negative teachings from their guardians which later manifest in the way they behave towards others when they are adults or grown-ups.
