Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe State on Wednesday said his administration had released more than 100 prisoners as part of efforts to decongest the prisons.
Dankwambo said at a reception in Gombe organised by the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, to welcome him back from the Lesser Hajj that the government had to pay the fines of some of the prisoners to enable them regain their freedom.
The governor said that the state committee on prerogative of mercy was also going round the prisons to identify prisoners who had displayed exceptional character and were qualified for pardon.
On suspects awaiting trial, the governor said very soon, some of them would also be released.
Reacting to alleged molestation of citizens by security agents, Dankwambo said the authorities concerned had been contacted and that henceforth, no innocent person would be molested.
The governor advised citizens of the state to cooperate with the security agents to enable them perform their duties more effectively.
He assured the people of the state that the government would continue to ensure that justice and fairplay prevail at all times and urged the people for more support.
