Court Jails Couple For Stealing In Onitsha 4 years ago 10

An Onitsha Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ogidi, Idemili North Council area of Anambra State has  jailed a couple for stealing goods worth N1.5 million. The couple, Sir and Lady, Eugene Obi Okoye were in court on a 17 count charge of breaking into the shop of an Onitsha based businessman, Chief Linus Ezenkwu of Nkwubego, and stealing several items.

It was gathered that the applicant, Chief Linus Ezenkwu, through his counsel, Chief Chris Adimora, approached the Magistrate’s Court stating that the couple broke into his shop, damaged his plastic chairs and made away with cash and other valuables worth N1.5 million.

It was further gathered that the couple pleaded guilty to the crime and pleaded for forgiveness. Delivering judgment, Chief Magistrate Phil Ebosie said, “The defendants have children at home that are dependent on them for their education, and they are also first offenders. So, they are hereby sentenced to one year imprisonment each.”

Counsel to Chief Linus Ezenkwu, Chris Adimora described the judgment as progress in the Nigerian judiciary, adding that the law must take its full course in the country. Home Page
