Anti-Obama Film Set To Become Box Office Hit 4 years ago 1

The documentary “2016: Obama’s America” has been one of the surprise hits of the summer movie season. It has become the top-grossing conservative political film of all time since its expanded opening Friday. The film had grossed an estimated $10.5 million as of Monday, according to

Director and star Dinesh D’Souza is hoping that “2016: Obama’s America” will eventually eclipse the total earned by Michael Moore’s left-leaning 2004 film “Fahrenheit 9/11,” which ranks as the highest-grossing documentary in box-office history.

“I really don’t care about it being the highest-grossing conservative film,” D’Souza told ABC News. “Actually, my goal is to chase Michael Moore.… I think our film can give him a run for his money.”

The film is now showing in more than 1,000 theaters, and that number is expected to double by Friday, which would put the movie’s release on par with a major Hollywood blockbuster. Last weekend, “2016” was already earning more money per screen than “The Bourne Legacy” and “The Expendables 2″ — combined.

“2016: Obama’s America” has a ways to go to catch up with “Fahrenheit 9/11,” which raked in $119 million at the box office. The filmmaker, who explores the potential sources of President Obama’s political beliefs, has been accused of including numerous factual errors. The film draws on his 2010 book, “The Roots of Obama’s Rage.”

D’Souza’s controversial screed makes the case that President Obama has a secret un-American agenda. He claims the president is desperate to fulfill the anti-colonial dreams of his late father, a man Obama barely knew, and that he is intentionally trying to diminish America’s power abroad.

D’Souza makes the case that by 2016, a second Obama term would inexorably lead to an utter collapse of the United States’ economy and the rise of a United States of Islam, led by a nuclear-armed Iran.

D’Souza says he’s “thrilled” with the success of his movie. He says people have been drawn to it because, “I know there is a deep hunger in America for information about Obama. I do feel that this is one of the most mysterious and elusive guys to occupy the White House, certainly in recent history.”

He’s hoping that the film will “embolden” conservatives to make films without the help of Hollywood bigwigs who have the reputation of being liberal. Home Page
