'23m Nigerians Are Unemployed'

Zamfara State Coordinator of the National Directorate of Employment, Alhaji Muhammad Alhassan, said based on a report by the National Bureau of Statistics, 23 million able bodied Nigerians are unemployed.

Speaking at the Youth With Entrepreneurship Innovation in Nigeria (YOU WIN) business training clinic in Gusau, Alhassan said about 60 per cent of Nigerians are still living below poverty line, adding that increasing level of poverty has a direct link with the unemployment situation in the country.

He said based on the mandate given to NDE and the magnitude of unemployment in the country, the directorate intervened directly through the employment counselling service, skills acquisition programmes and entrepreneurship development of the people.

“Today, we are witnessing yet another collaboration, the NDE and the You WIN programme. Under the programme, 1,200 people with good business plans will be selected from the six geo-political zones and each will be given N1 to N10 million. The deadline for submission of applications is October 14, 2012.
