Ekiti Assembly passes vote of confidence in Fayemi

Ekiti State House of Assembly on Wednesday, passed a vote of confidence in Governor Kayode Fayemi, saying he had been performing well in carrying out the programmes of his government.

The vote of confidence, which came by way of motion moved by the Majority Leader of the House, Mr Churchill Adedipe, saw all the 26 members of the Assembly, including the two members of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), contribute to the debate, in support of the motion.

Some of the lawmakers, who contributed to the debate, said Governor Fayemi deserved more than a vote of confidence, and moved that he be adopted for a second term of office.

Some of the lawmakers sang and chorused their desire to have the governor contest for a second term on the floor of the House, saying that he had done well enough to remain in office beyond 2014.

But Governor Fayemi, in reaction to the calls said, he would prefer the lawmakers to stick to the vote of confidence motion and continue in the support they had given his government, and leave the issue of 2014, which he referred to as “conjectures.”

While thanking the legislators for the gesture, Fayemi said they should continue to embrace constructive engagements in dealing with him, and leave the campaign for a second term.

“By your vote of confidence today, you have placed a big burden on me to do more and ensure that all the facets of the state’s economy are given a facelift. But let us limit the encouragement you are giving by the vote of confidence and forget about second term or 2014, because have a lot of work to do for our people now.”

Speaking earlier, the Speaker of the House, Dr Adewale Omirin, charged the members to bring the same dedication to duty of their first year in the House to the coming years.
