Retired Soldiers Urge FG To Pay Their Pensions

Mr Peter Ajayi, Chairman, Elders Association of Retired Volunteer Soldiers, on Tuesday in Lagos urged the Federal Government to save them from dying untimely by urgently paying their pensions.

Ajayi said this in a news statement made available to newsmen at the Lagos State House of Assembly.

He said that the association members numbering over 63 have been denied their pensions and gratuities since they left service three decades ago.

``We have faith in this government that justice, equity and fairness will prevail.

``We rely on judgement over the unjust retirement of volunteer soldiers after the civil war with a sum of N1, 500.

``The soldiers that fought civil war to keep Nigeria from being torn apart have been neglected.

``Some have starved to death while their families were left alone without pensions, especially the '63N.A.' who fought the Biafran war, `` he said.

He wondered why soldiers that fought on behalf of Nigerian Army were denied their rights, unlike their colleagues on the Biafran side that were pardoned and paid.

``It was pathetic and unfortunate that the said Biafran soldiers who rebelled against this nation and were dismissed, could be pardoned along with their leaders and they all received their pensions and gratuities, `` he said.

Ajayi urged the government to assist the retirees by compassionately looking into their matter.

He said that if this was done, many of the members would live a decent life and take care of their immediate families.
