Modern life is full of hassles, deadlines, frustrations, and demands. For many people, stress is so commonplace that it has become a way of life. Stress isn’t always bad. In small doses, it can help you perform under pressure and motivate you to do your best. But when you’re constantly running in emergency mode, your mind and body pay the price. You can protect yourself by recognizing the signs and symptoms of stress and taking steps to reduce its harmful effect
Stress is something everyone feels at some point, emotional stress, work stress, family stress, academics stress, and so on. And if not well managed, could have negative impact on the individual.
But not to worry. There are ways to manage stress so it does not wear you out.
Nip it: the first step to reducing stress is nipping it down before it gets out of hand. You may sleep for long hours and still not have a deep sleep and this would consequently make you feel wornout. Try not to dwell too much on those things that put you under unnecessary pressure. For instance, if you have a backlog of office work on your table, no need dwelling and brooding over it while you are home when there is little or nothing you can do about it until you get to the office. Simply give your mind some peace.
Exercise your body: work fatigue is not the same thing as exercise exhaustion. Most times, we barely have the strength to lift a limb after our daily routine but a life without some exercise would sure make you more stressed. You could do some skips in the morning before setting off for work. Exercise and workouts help to balance stress hormones. You could also listen to some good slow music – this helps to relax the nerves and usually would set you on an easier pace of mind.
Hang out with friends: when you are stressed, hang out with friends or phone a friend and have a nice chat. This would generate the feel good hormone Oxytocin which would ultimately help make you relax. Do some fun thing. Many people are stressed because they have no way of relaxing out of their regular busy schedule. Ensure you do something for fun. Some dancing could also do your nerves some good.
If it is not working out – take a break: laying something aside does not make you lazy. If you can’t get the tables right and the drafts are not coming out right or the figures are not adding up, simply shut your system and take a break. You could take a walk within the office or lie back on your seat with your eyes shut. DO NOT THINK ABOUT IT. Just give your mind some space. You could shift your thought to something pleasant and this would help you calm down. Note, a few minutes break has never been known to kill anyone.
Talk it out: depending on what type of stress you’re having you could talk it out with someone who can help. If you are going through emotional stress, you could see a psychologist for counselling. You could also share your problems with your significant others, as the saying goes – a problem shared is half solved.
