UNILAG Students Protest Name Change

Students of the University of Lagos, now Moshood Abiola University, in Akoka, Lagos came out this morning in their numbers to protest the change of name by President Goodluck Jonathan. Mr Jonathan changed the name in his speech, marking the commemoration of Nigeria's Democracy Day (May 29). This change of name, he said was to honour the late MKO Abiola who passed on in 1998.

The change of name, it seems, does not sit well with majority of the students, alumni of the school and other Nigerians who insist that a change of name is not what is needed but a total overhaul of the educational sector.

The protest has spread to the streets of Yaba and Akoka.
