ECOWAS Pledges Support For Mali Government 4 years ago 0

The ECOWAS Commission has pledged it support for the new transitional unity government in Mali towards speedy recovery of peace in the country.

In a statement by the commission, ECOWAS president, Ambassador Désiré Kadré Ouedraogo said the commission took note of the transitional government of national unity in Mali, saying it is a development that is in line with the decisions of the authority of heads of state and government taken at its 41st Ordinary Summit in Yamoussoukro in June 2012, as well as the decisions of the African Union and the United Nations.

“In this regard, ECOWAS wishes to reaffirm its commitment to accompany Mali and express its readiness to urgently consider any request for assistance that may be formulated by the Government,” the statement read.

The Commission also expressed the wish that the new government will take urgent steps to address the daunting challenges ahead, including the stabilization of the transition, the re-establishment of the unity and territorial integrity of Mali, and the conduct of free, fair and transparent elections within the period of the transition.
