Perm Secs Who Became Popular In The Absence Of Ministers

President Muhammadu Buhari's decision not to appoint ministers on time was criticised by a large section of the Nigerian population.

But while many complained about the absence of ministers, they were not observant that the job of the would-be ministers were properly taken care of by federal permanent secretaries who are career civil servants and do the nitty-gritty of the work in their various ministries.

1. Engineer John Chukwu: Imo-state born Chukwu has been very visible and effective. He is the permanent secretary of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The 58-year old who graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka started his career as a civil engineer in the Federal Ministry of Housing and Environment, Lagos in 1983. Chukwu who is a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE), has held forth in an admirable way since the commencement of the Buhari administration. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Management (MNIM), A member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (MASCE) amongst others. He is an experienced engineer, and certified as a good administrator, technocrat, humane, humble, patriotic and a detribalized Nigerian by his co-workers.

2. Ambassador Godknows Igali: It is for nothing that he has a national award (OON). Igali is the permanent secretary in the ministry of power and his experience as a civil servant is second to none. Igali, 53, who holds a PhD from the University of Venezuela, Caracas, has held forth in a very controversial ministry commendably as Nigeria's power situation dramatically improved when Buhari resumed office as the president.

3. Linus Awute: Many Nigerians will remember him for the swiftness the ministry of health under his watch quickly monitored and handled the fake rumour about the outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease in Calabar. The ministry monitored the situation and found out that it was a case of the death of a 21-year-old student of the University of Calabar. 52-year old Rivers-born Awute, who was visible during the period, was on-top of the situation all through the period.

4. Mrs Ibukun Odusote: She is the permanent secretary of the ministry of agriculture.  Her sterling performance alongside unarguably the best minister under the Goodluck Jonathan's administration, Akinwunmi Adeshina (who is now the president of the African Development Bank) gives any keen observer a hint to how hard-working she is.  Odusote who is from Ogun state is also a wife to a pastor. She holds a B.Sc. degree in Computer Science/Economics from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile-Ife and a M.Sc. degree in Computer Science from the University of Lagos.
