The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency set ablaze about 20, 949.411kg of illicit drugs in Kano on Thursday.
The drugs were siezed in various operations within the state.
Deputy Governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, represented the governor at the event. Chairman of the Agency, Alhaji Ahmadu Giade, said public destruction of the drug exhibits had been one of the strategies to keep the society drug-free.
Giade, who was represented by the Agency’s Director of Prosecution, Mr. Femi Oloruntoba, said, “We are gathered here to witness the destruction of 20,949kg of illicit drugs seized by the Kano State Command.
“These drugs consist of 20, 248.973kg of cannabis, 688.622kg of psychotropic substances, 11.221kg of cocaine and 595.47 grammes of heroin.”
“Destruction of illicit exhibits is one of our strategies to keep our society drug-free. It is the last item in the drug control chain. When drug traffickers are arrested, they are charged to court under the NDLEA Act.
“After the accused persons are convicted, the court orders the destruction of the forfeited drug exhibits. Therefore, this event is in compliance with a court order.”
The chairman also recalled that the agency’s 2011 report showed that Kano State had the highest number of arrests in the country.
Giade said, “A total of 1,281 suspected male drug traffickers were apprehended with 4, 921. 582kg of narcotics. Cannabis has the largest share with 4, 531. 52kg.
“Psychotropic substances followed with 393.289kg, while cocaine and heroine are 5.1kg and 1.67kg respectively.”
According to him, Kano State also recorded the successful conviction of 209 drug offenders and counselling of 878 clients with drug abuse problems.
Giade said the seizure as well as the arrests and conviction recorded reflected the agency’s determination to make the country drug-free.
Kano State Commander, NDLEA, Mr. Sumaila Ethan, gave a breakdown of the seizure made by his Command.
He said, “Piled up for destruction this afternoon is a whooping 20. 949. 411kgs of narcotics drugs whose cases were completed and approved by His Lordship, the Judge of the Federal High Court, Kano for this exercise.”
According to him, cannabis sativa, otherwise known as Indian hemp, constituted the largest with 20.248.973kgs. Psychotropic substances were next with 688.622kgs. Cocaine aggregated to 11.221kgs and heroine 595.47gms.
He said a further breakdown show that the Kano State Command siezed 20, 922.954kgs while Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport Special Area Command confiscated 26.457kgs and abandoned seizure amounted to 16,654. 969kgs.
He also stressed that the Kano NDLEA secured convictions of 480 persons for drug related issues.
