HID Awolowo To Be Buried In White Damask And Gold Casket

Late Mrs Hannah Idowu Awolowo wife of former Premier of the old Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, will be buried on Wednesday, November 25 in a white damask cloth she bought and kept for her burial 36 years ago.

Her daughter, Reverend (Mrs) Tola Oyediran, said: "Mama in her unique way had kept a white damask to be laid in her casket whenever she died since the day she stopped her fabric sales business. And if I am not mistaken, I think she stopped selling fabrics around 1979; meaning that since then, she had kept that damask for that purpose. That is her wish and it will be like that".

Oyediran also said that mama Awolowo will be buried beside her husband in a gold casket which will be brought in from the United States of America inside the Awolowo mausoleum in the family compound in Okenne, Ogun state.

According to Nigerian Tribune, the all marble mausoleum reveals an immaculate tomb  where the remains of the late sage lies.

The remains of Obafemi Awolwo lies in a grave right below a brownish sculpture of him. Another space meant for his late wife was recently created.

Other items inside the mausoleum as disclosed by Yakub Ismaila who has been working with the Awolowos for over 25 years are the photograph of the sage’s lying-in-state, the Nigerian flag beside the stairs into the graveside, three wreaths, an altar with two golden candlesticks and a cross, and a blue-coloured family Bible presented to Papa Awolowo during his 72nd birthday by Honourable Justice S.O. Sogbetun  and Mrs C.B. Sogbetun on March 6, 1981.

Mama Awolowo passed on at the age of 99 on Saturday, September 19, as preparations for her centenary birthday were in top gear.

Meanwhile, the wife of Nigeria’s president, Hajia Aisha Buhari, said that the country needs good and honest women like the late Mrs Hannah Awolowo.

Hajia Buhari was in Ikenne, the hometown of Awolowo to pay homage to the family over the death of the matriarch of the family on Wednesday, October 21.
