The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Housing and Urban Renewal, Mr. Emmanuel Enoidem, has offered free medical services to residents and communities in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area.
The commissioner said on Saturday in Etim Ekpo that his decision to offer in free healthcare was due to his love for the people.
He said, “Love or service has no cost – not money. The programme is going to continue for the rest of my life. I used to handle cases for free for the poor and oppressed.”
A consultant surgeon and one of the facilitators of the initiative, Dr. Udeme Akpan, said the programme had been benefitted by 1,627 persons. Akpan, who stated that the programme was an experiment, disclosed that his team did not know that the attendance would be so high.
He said, “We have operated six people, the seventh one is in the theatre as we speak. The free medical treatment is not limited to the people of Etim Ekpo, it extends to all the five neighbouring communities.
“We treated two persons from Oyo State on Friday. We have a total of 10 specialists. We never expected such a turnout. But we were able to cope.”
