Fake Policeman To Spend Three Years In Jail

A 42-year-old man, Lawrence Ezenwa, whose wife was being investigated for alleged phone theft, has been jailed three years by an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court.

Ezenwa was jailed by Magistrate Olusola Aluko, who found him guilty of parading himself as a police sergeant while trying to bail his wife at a police staion.

A copy of the charge sheet obtained by our correspondent, on Thursday, alleged that Ezenwa committed the crime on August 13, 2012, when he tried to bail his wife accused of stealing a BlackBerry phone.

The charge sheet alleged that the convict introduced himself as a sergeant when policemen at Dugbe Police Station, Osogbo, demanded to know his mission at the station.

It added that Ezenwa, who said he was attached to the Osogbo Area Commander’s office, failed to substantiate the claim when asked to produce his identity card.

Ezenwa, however, pleaded not guilty to the impersonation charge.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Isiaka Ajadi, told the court that the convict later confessed at the police station that he was not policeman.

The charge sheet reads in part, “That you Lawrence Ezenwa on the 13th of August, 2012 about 10:30am at Dugbe Police Station in Osogbo with intent that you may be taken as a member of Nigeria Police Force did introduce yourself as a police sergeant serving at Area Commander’s office, Osogbo knowing the same to be false.”

Ajadi told the court that by the act, “Ezenwa has committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 109 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II, Laws of Osun State 2003.”

The magistrate said Ezenwa’s case was pathetic because he went as far as impersonating at a police station and jailed him for three years with hard labour.

The magistrate, however, gave Ezenwa, an option of N20, 000 fine.
