On Wednesday, ten gunmen abducted Prof. Cyprian Onyeji, the Vice-Chancellor of Enugu State University of Technology.
The abduction took place at 11.30 a.m. at the school gate, as Prof. Cyprian Onyeji was being driven into the main campus of the institution. Four of the gunmen had apparently been lurking in a rickety car parked at the school gate, awaiting the VC’s arrival. As soon as they sighted his two-vehicle convoy, the gunmen used the rickety car to block the gate, jumped out and started shooting into the air. Six others appeared “from nowhere” and attacked the convoy. They shot and deflated the four tyres of the police van escorting the VC.
A policeman in the escort van who tried to resist them was shot, while the gunmen dragged the VC’s orderly and driver out of the car and drove off with Onyeji in his official Honda car. Some of the gunmen also jumped into a car they had parked at a motor park at the school’s entrance and drove behind the VC’s car.
UPDATE: The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Enugu State command, Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the kidnap. He said the police were already on the trail of the culprits. The wounded police officers, according to the PPRO, were being treated at an undisclosed hospital. The university’s public relations officer, Ossy Ugwuoti, said no demand has been made by the abductors. He said authorities of the university and the securities were already on top of the situation.
