Four members of a notorious kidnap gang that had been involved in various kidnap cases, including the kidnap of a medical doctor attached to the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Asaba, Delta State, have been killed.
The four members of the gang met their waterloo, weekend, after they were trailed to their hideout at Anwai while trying to collect N2 million ransom from the family of their victim.
State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Charles Muka, who confirmed the incident, said the gang had attempted to kidnap a woman, Mrs. Victoria Offor, at Issele-Uku, by her gate on her way to church on Sunday. But the woman was said to have raised alarm, which attracted her son- in-law, one Mr. Jude Molokwu, to the scene.
He added: “The woman escaped in the process while the kidnapers seized the said Molokwu and whisked him away in a waiting car. However, our new special anti-kidnap unit being their first, outing, reassured the family and swung into action. They trailed the kidnappers to Anwai forest.”
He said that following a gun battle that ensued, four members of the gang were gunned down while others escaped with bullet wounds. He added that a mechanic with a workshop close to the woman’s residence was also picked up over alleged complicity in the incident.
“The gang was responsible for the kidnap of a doctor at FMC, Asaba, about three months ago for which doctors protested. One of the suspects, who was arrested, confessed that N3 million was collected from the doctor. He is helping in our investigation,” he said.
