Sylva Beats Timi Alaibe In Bayelsa Governorship Primary

The Bayelsa state All Progressives Congress primary election which held on Tuesday, September 22, in Yanogoa has finally produced the former governor of the state, Chief Timipre Sylva as the winner and the party’s flag bearer in the poll slated for December 5.

The primaries had earlier been  reportedly marred by violence when thugs disrupted the electoral process by throwing stones at delegates of the party who were already lined up for screening, creating chaos and panic at the venue.

However, the accreditation for the APC primary election eventually began late in the evening.

Sylva clinched the APC governorship ticket with a total of 726 votes while Warman Ogoriba came out a distant second with 10 votes and an arch-rival, the former Niger delta Development Commission (NDDC) managing director, Timi Alaibe had four votes, This Day reports.

The primary election was expected to have had over 1,500 delegates. The results were announced by a member of the APC electoral committee headed by Governor Adams Oshiomhole, Nelson Alapa.

There were others who also contested for the highly revered ticked in the state. They are

Chief Romeo, Francis Ebite, Christopher Enai, Augustine Febor, Charity Vedelago, Dikivie Ikiogha, Ebitimi Amgbare and Imoro Kubor.

In his acceptance of the victory, the former governor assured the people that he would not let them down insisting that the APC has indeed won the election.

Sylva said: “When finally we win, we would sweep all garbage out of government.”

According to Sahara Reporters, Sylva described his victory as proof of the indivisibility of the APC at the state and the national level.

He said: "I have never been so proud in my life. I have belonged to many political parties such as the defunct UNCP and the nearly dead PDP. But I am very proud of the APC which clearly has internal democracy."

Sequel to the conclusion of the primary election, Warman Ogoriba, a former member of the House of Representatives accepted defeat and spoke on behalf of other aspirants commending the erstwhile governor for his triumph.

Ogoriba said: "I am proud of the APC for organizing a credible election with such outcome. It was a fight well fought.”

He noted that the election was free and fair.

Sylva had boasted expressing confidence over the Bayelsa governorship primary election that he would win the party’s ticket.

He said:

“The primary election is just a process to our ultimate goal of retrieving our collective political destiny from the PDP grabbers, who have arrested the development of the state since 2012, and fulfilling it for the good of all.”
