Cholera Kills Seven In Katsina

Seven persons have been reported killed in a cholera outbreak in Katsina State.

Director, Epidiology and Disease Control in the state Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. A.T Hamza, said this when he received the Commissioner of Health, Alhaji Mohammed Nasidi, at Kurfi General Hospital on Friday.

He said about 77 people infected with the disease had been receiving treatment.

The director told the commissioner that the outbreak of the disease was traced to poor sanitation and drinking of contaminated water by residents.

Hamza expressed concern over the poor surveillance and notification system at the local government level.

He advised the councils to establish epidemic preparedness and response committee.

Nasidi urged residents in the rural areas to desist from drinking contaminated water to protect themselves from cholera attacks.

He emphasised the need for the councils to organise  community enlightenment campaigns for environmental sanitation in their respective domain.
