Trailer Accidents: Lagos Govt Set To Enforce Road Traffic Laws

The recent spate of accidents in Lagos involving articulated vehicles also known as 'trailers' seem to have spurred the Lagos state government to take actions against trailer drivers and operators. 

The government reiterated its determination to ensure strict enforcement of the Lagos state Road Traffic Law 2012, which restricts trailers and other long vehicles from plying the metropolis between the hours of 6am to 9pm.

Speaking to journalists on the issue, the permanent secretary, ministry of transportation, Mr. Oluseyi Whenu, said the trailers plying the roads withing this period are contravening Section 2 (i) and 2 (ii) of the Traffic Law.

To this end, Whenu said the state government will henceforth go tough on any trailer and long vehicle that contravenes the law as such vehicle will be impounded and made to pay the stipulated fine accordingly.

Recall that on Wednesday, September 2, a heavy duty container skidded off the Ojuelegba bridge in Lagos and landed on two private cars, crushing the occupants of the vehicles.

Two days ago, another articulated truck skidded off along Ikorodu-Shagamu expressway causing  serious vehicular obstruction in the axis.

Meanwhile, leaders of various transport unions and associations in Lagos at the weekend rose from a meeting with officials of the state government with a resolve to support the new directive introduced in apprehending traffic offenders.

Meanwhile, a recent report by relevant authorities has revealed that more than 120 Nigerians have died from accidents involving fuel tankers and articulated vehicles in the last five months.
