Four officers of the FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) and other ad hoc staff of the directorate were at the weekend brutally beaten by some motorcyclists popularly called Okada riders.
The motorcyclists, who came in large numbers, also damaged a vehicle belonging to the directorate.
City News gathered that the officers had impounded hundreds of motorcycles operating in the city center and that while they were returning to the office at Mabushi, one of their vehicle loaded with the impounded motorcycles got spoiled in the area.
“The motorcyclists sighted them and started smashing their vehicles with dangerous weapons in an attempt to remove some of the impounded motorcycles from the vehicle. When the officers attempted to stop them, they became violent and tore their clothes and as well injured them,’’ an eyewitness said.
Reacting, DRTS’s Director, Wilson Rotimi Alade, confirmed the incident and mentioned Area 1, AYA, Lugbe, airport road/Garki village, Area3 junction, Durumi as the most difficult places for his men to work effectively because of the attitude of the motorcyclists operating in those areas.
He said the injured officers are responding to treatment in the hospital, while some of the hoodlums were arrested by the policemen attached to the taskforce and they have been handed over to the police for prosecution.
Alade said the increase in traffic congestion in the territory was responsible for the influx of people and urged motorists to always obey traffic laws and use legal parks without being prompted.
He informed that the directorate has impounded about 10,000 motorcycles and presently muting an idea of a Public Private Partnership policy to build a recycling plant for the recycling of the seized motorcycles.
He said tricycle operators are allowed to operate in the area council and some estates but not on the express ways.
The Head of the task force, Mukhtar Mohammed, called on the residents to stop patronizing motorcycle operators for their safety and security, adding that the taskforce yesterday alone impounded 100 motorcycles at Gudu district.
