A pastor with the Good News Church (GNC) in Maiduguri was on Monday evening shot dead by gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram.

The pastor, Baba Ali Samari, 57 was with a local assembly of the Good News Church (GNC) in the metropolis before he was killed by gunmen at his Mafoni residence.

Residents of the area claimed that the evangelist, who also repaired wrist-watches at the Post Office Area of the metropolis, was trailed to his house by the gunmen while returning from his daily activities at his small shop located at the post office area.

They claimed that some assailants suspected to be Boko Haram had earlier this year, threatened to kill the evangelist if he failed to vacate his residence at Mafoni area but he dismissed the warnings.

Borno State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Gideon Jibrin, a deputy Superintendent of Police, confirmed the incident, adding that the police received the report on Tuesday morning that suspected gunmen attacked the residence of one Baba Ali at Mafoni.

The PPRO said Mafoni, was one of the black spots identified by the Joint Task Force (JTF), the police and other security agencies in the state as hide outs of some Boko Haram members in the metropolis.

He however, said that no arrest had been made even as he hinted that the scene of the incident had been cordoned off.
