Archbishop: FG, Boko Haram Negotiation Worthwhile, If...

Archbishop Anthony Obinna of Owerri Catholic Archdiocese has said the Federal Government’s negotiation with the Boko Haram sect was worthwhile, only if it could stop the sect’s killing of innocent Nigerians.

Obinna said this at a news conference to herald the 2012 Odenigbo lecture scheduled for Saturday.

He urged the government to do everything possible to stop the killing of Nigerians, especially Christians in the north, stressing that it is its primary responsibility to protect the lives of citizens.

The archbishop, however, urged the government to use superior power to halt the activities of the Boko Haram sect, if it continued to engage in killings.

"If any group of human beings continues to kill others, government is liable because it has failed in carrying out its primary responsibility of protecting the lives of the citizens."

"Muslims and Christians should join hands in making Nigeria a peaceful nation: nobody is permitted to kill in the name of Allah or God", the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the Archbishop as saying at the briefing.

On the involvement of the youths in crime, the cleric blamed people in leadership positions, whom, he said, had taught the youths so through their corrupt conducts.

Obinna said it was regrettable that many talented Nigerian youths had deployed their talents toward committing crimes.

He said the talents of such youth should be re-directed toward productive activities that would benefit the country and lead to its development. On fears of probable extinction of the Igbo language in future, he challenged governments in Igbo speaking states to make serious efforts toward reviving the language.
