Pharmacist Jailed For Drug Theft 4 years ago 4

A Surulere Magistrate’s Court in Lagos yesterday sentenced 27-year-old pharmacist Bunmi Adenle to five months imprisonment for stealing drugs worth N1,445,960.

The magistrate, Mrs. A. Tobi, however, gave the convict an option of payment of N2.5 million fine in lieu of serving the prison term. Tobi said the sentence followed the prosecution proving the case against the accused beyond reasonable doubt.

“By the evidence and fact provided before the court, the accused is found guilty of stealing the said amount and hereby sentenced to five months’ imprisonment or an option of N2.5 million,’’ she pronounced.

The accused, who resides at No. 3 Ogendegbe St., Ketu, Lagos, was first arraigned in August 2010 on a one-count charge of stealing.

Adenle, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

At the trial, the prosecutor, Cpl. Samuel Ishola, told the court that the accused committed the offence at the Premier Specialist Medical Centre between April and June 2010.

He said the accused, a former employee of the hospital, stole the drugs at the hospital at No. 7 Osalade Close, off Ologun, Agbaje, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The prosecutor said it was later discovered that the accused moved those drugs to her husband’s store, who is also a pharmacist.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 284 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State 2011. Home Page
