Flood Washes Away Farmlands In Kano

Several farmlands have been destroyed by floods from an overflowing river located in between Tudun Wada and Doguwa Local Government areas of Kano State, Daily Trust gathered.

Villagers said hundreds of farms situated in Burji, Dogon Kawo and Gimawa villages, were affected by the disaster, even as they warned that more farmlands and homes are facing threats from the surging river.

The river started overflowing it boundaries destroying crops about a week ago and flooded more cultivated areas as rainfall increases later in the week, residents said.

“If nothing is done, only God knows the level of destruction it will wreak this year,” said Alhaji Dalha Alhassan Burji.

“The river is posing serious threat to communities in Burji, Dogon Kawo and Gimawa and is threatening more farms as well as houses,” he said.

Daily Trust also gathered that cracks discovered on the embankment of a dam in Tudun Wada Local Government area is causing serious fears among residents, as the water is said to be leaking from the facility.

In a related development, a family of six were reportedly killed last week Thursday by flood water in Bebeji Local Government area of the state. The disaster occurred flowing hours of heavy downpour in the area.

Meanwhile, Kano State commissioner of water resources Alhaji Yunusa Dangwani said his office was not aware of the destruction of farms by flood in Doguwa Local Government area.

He, however, said repair work on four gullies that were recently discovered on the Tudun Wada dam commenced on Saturday.
