Cop Remanded Over Killing Of 12-Yr-Old Boy In Kano

A police sergeant who shot dead a 12-year-old boy on Sallah eve in Kano State was yesterday remanded in prison custody by a Magistrate’s Court, Kano police command acting spokesperson, ASP Musa Magaji Majiya, disclosed.

Majiya said Sergeant Laminu Adamu was charged before No-man’s Land Magistrate’s Court 25 yesterday for causing death through negligence.

He said the ex-cop was arraigned after he was found culpable in the murder of the boy by an administrative panel.

Sergeant Adamu who was attached to Gwale Police Division in the state, had last week allegedly shot dead Hassan Muhammad at Gwale quarters. The killing of the boy, who was hawking sachet wahter, sparked protest in the area, with angry youths threatening to raze the nearby Gwale Police Division.

Muhammad was allegedly shot in the face as a patrol vehicle conveying policemen was passing by.

The police spokesperson said the Kano State police commissioner, Ibrahim K Idris, gave the go ahead for the dismissed cop to be prosecuted.

“After undergoing orderly room trial, he was found culpable of the offence and dismissed,” said the police spokesperson.

He added that “The commissioner has also warned policemen in the state to adhere strictly to police Force Order 237, which governs the use of firearms and has called on members of the public to continue to cooperate with the command to fight criminals to standstill,” he said.
